先日アップしたVolunteer Medics Worldwideへの支援のお願い、日本語版です。これからファンドレイジングをする際、彼らのように小さくて無名の、しかし被災地の最前線で活動している団体への寄付もご検討いただければと思います。

現在、友人・同僚の3名が宮城県、福島県で救援活動に従事しています。
ボランティア・メディックス・ワールドワイド (V.M.W.)という非営利団体のボランティアとして、1日18時間から20時間、通訳を中心に救済活動を行っています。その友人たちによれば、被災地の深刻な被害状況と物資の不足は想像を絶するものがあり、資金不足であるとのことです。緊急に募金活動をしてくれないかという依頼を受け、皆様にご連絡させていただいている次第です。お一人でも多くの方がスポンサーになってくださるように、知人、友人の方々にV.M.W.についてお話いただければ幸いです。
特に瓦礫の破片や海水のせいで目を傷めている方々が多く見られ、目の治療を中心とした、身体・精神的ケアが中心に行われています。目薬をはじめとする医薬品が足りず、先日何とか地元の教会の援助により、３万円分の目薬が手に入ったという連絡が入りました。飲料水、食糧、その他の必需品も購入する必要があります。
マグニチュード(M)9.0の東北大震災発生から１か月が経過しましたが、いまだに水道が使用できないため、市民は水をもらうために行列を作って何時間も待たなければなりません。さらに３日前に発生した(M)7.1の地震により、8人の死亡者と1000人以上の負傷者が出ています。その後も一日に何度も訪れる余震により、現状のきびしい中、常に住民の方々に何が出来るかを考え、活動を続けています。

電気は点いているが、節電のため薄暗い。水道は使用できず、たとえ水があっても汚染されているため、人々は列に何時間も並んで水の配給を受けている。携帯電話は使用できなくなることが多い。JASDF（航空自衛隊）は土砂、ごみ、車、遺体の山にやっと取り掛かったところである。この24時間以内で、さらに7人の遺体が見つかった。
大震災から１か月が経っているのに未だこの状況・・・起こっていることが信じられない。政府は原子炉の対応だけで手一杯のようである。

Volunteer Medics Worldwide is in Japan and Needs Your Help NOW (by Mina S.)
Dear Friends in the US and around the World,
It has been a month since the three-fold disaster struck Japan. First, a magnitude 9.0-earthquake rocked the north eastern Japan, second, a monstrous tsunami swept away everything in its path, and now, radiation is leaking out of surrounding nuclear power plants. Today, the news reported that Japan raised the nuclear crisis rating to the same as the Chernobyl disaster. In addition, more horror occurred when another earthquake with magnitude 7.1 slammed the same area, claiming eight more lives and injuring more than 1,000 people. The compassion shown by the American people is real, and the people of Japan truly need help!
You can help today by supporting the Volunteer Medics Worldwide (V.M.W.), a non-profit organization that is currently on a one-month rescue mission in Higashi Matsushima and Ishinomaki in Miyagi Prefecture. The V.M.W. is in desperate need of funds as the damage and citizen’s needs are far beyond expectation. Specifically they need to purchase water, food, eye drops, medicine and other basic necessities for the citizens of the affected areas.
The V.M.W staff and volunteers plan to deliver some aid to Minami Soma, Fukushima Prefecture in a couple of days. The town of Minami-Soma is very close to the nuclear reactor, and it still has about 20,000 residents living there. The residents have been told to stay inside their homes because of the radiation. They haven't received much aid since the earthquake struck, and the Japanese government has no definite plan to deliver aid to them. The local government does not have the means to assist the residents with evacuation either. The mayor of this town posted a video on You Tube begging for assistance (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=70ZHQ--cK40).
There is even more help required than is reported. Apparently 30% of the shelters does not have TV or telephone, thus making it impossible to actively ask for assistance. It is also said that some of the major relief organizations are about to end their missions in Japan. That means the work of smaller relief organizations becomes even more critical.

Basic Facts on Annual Radiation Levels in the U.S. and in Tokyo . . . and Why There is No Need for Panic at This Time (by Junichi Taguchi, MD)
To those who live in the Tokyo area and are concerned about radiation exposure:
Please refer to an article below written by Dr. Junichi Taguchi, Clinic Director of Tokyo Midtown Medical Center. The clinic has been receiving many inquiries regarding radiation exposure. Some are even requesting potassium iodine. While concern is understandable and the situation should be monitored carefully, Dr. Taguchi explains there is no need to panic at this time.
Basic Facts on Annual Radiation Levels in the U.S. and in Tokyo, and Why There is No Need for Panic at This Time
According to radiationanswers.org, individuals who frequently fly often wonder about the extra radiation exposure they receive during flights. The amount of radiation received depends on several aspects, including the length of the flight, the altitude reached during the flight, and of course, the frequency of travel. Some of the approximate doses when flying at 36,000 feet are:
- New York to Los Angeles round trip = 4 mrem
- New York to Paris round trip = 6 mrem
- New York to London round trip = 6 mrem
- Los Angeles to Paris round trip = 10 mrem
- Los Angeles to Chicago round trip = 2 mrem
Annual radiation exposure in US is 360 mrem, or 3.6 mSv. In Tokyo, it is 235 mrem, or 2.35mSv. The difference in the two numbers is due mainly to the difference in radon concentration and man-made sources such as medical x-rays.
So, if the current radiation level were to continue for a year, the total estimated annual amount of radiation in Tokyo will be at most, 2.4 mSv (annual average) + 0.88 mSv (extra radiation) = 3.28mSv.
It should be noted that calculation of the extra radiation on an annual basis is a very conservative estimate, as radiation levels in Tokyo are falling daily, and the current situation is not expected to last for a whole year.
In essence, this conservative number is still less than average annual radiation exposure in US, and is not a cause for panic.

3月11日からそろそろ１ヶ月がたとうとしています。
私は現在アメリカ在住で、日本に住んでいたときには心理職についていました。高齢者専門病院で患者さん、および家族のカウンセリングを３年、その後は高次脳機能障害の臨床研究に６年携わり、現在は神経科学研究の技術者として８年程働いております。こんな経歴の私が「心のケア」について皆様に向けて書くのはふさわしくないのは承知しておりますが、自分の経験もふまえ、また、このブログの主に説得されたので、少し長くなりますが、書かせていただきます。
被災された方々、家族や親しい方を震災で失った方、未だ連絡が取れないで心配している方々へのケアについては専門家の方がいろいろと書いてくれています。リンク先を一番最後に乗せてありますので、どうぞそちらをご覧下さい。
ここであえて書きたいことは、心のケアは、被災者の方だけではなく、被災してないからこそ生まれてくる罪悪感にも必要だということです。たとえ被災地に全く知り合いがいない人、遠く離れた海外に住んでいる人でも必要になることがあります。これは、そういう、被災地から遠く離れた人々に読んで欲しいのです。
今回の震災は、海外にいても ＵstreamＮＨＫ などで日本のニュースを逐一、そしてリアルタイムで見ることができました。遠くに住む我々にはありがたかったことではありますが、また逆に、次々と入ってくるあまりの衝撃的な映像、内容に、ニュースから離れられず、眠れなかったり、すぐに涙がでてきたり、何もできない自分の無力さにただ呆然としている方々も多かったことと思います。このような視覚的情報は心の均衡を壊すのに十分すぎるものでした。未曾有の震災がもたらした被害は、被災地にいない多くの人々にも今まで経験したことのないショックを与えたはずです。
被災地から遠く離れ、安全で、停電もなく、食べ物も水も豊富にある生活をしている私たちは、被災地のために何かしなくては、という思いが特に強くあるのではないでしょうか。
「自分だけ」が何不自由なく生活していることに罪悪感を覚えることもあります。あなたは全く悪くないのに。
「被災地の方は不便な生活をしているのだから。」
他人を思いやる心は素晴らしいと思います。でも、極端な話、私がここアメリカで節電をしても、日本の被災地への電力供給の足しにはなりません（電気料金が少し減ってその分を募金に回せるかもしれませんし、節電は良いことですが）。
「お花見をして楽しい気分になるのも何だか申し訳ない、映画を見に行く元気なんてないし、日本でも楽しいイベントを自粛しているのだから、私も自粛しないと。」
楽しいことを自粛することが被災地のためになるのでしょうか？自分の「罪悪感」や「申し訳なく思う気持ち」をどうしようもないから、楽しいことを自粛することで何とか心のバランスを取っているのではないですか？
先日のニュースで花見を自粛しないで欲しい、という岩手のお酒「南部美人」の蔵元からの訴えを見ました。お酒が消費されないからです。過度の自粛はかえって経済を圧迫し、被災地やその近郊で生活をしている方々へ迷惑になることもあるという一例ではないでしょうか。
被災地の人々のために何かしたいという気持ちを誰もが持っています。何となく誰かに悪い気がする「罪悪感」を持つことはないのです。私たちは遠くにいるからこそ、今を普通に、元気に過ごすことで、これからも被災地への支援を長く続けて行けるのだと思います。
もう１つ。
子供たち、家族のことを放っていないでしょうか。遠くの被災者、被災地に思いを馳せすぎて、身近な人たちを、自分の普段の生活を犠牲にしていないでしょうか。
どうか、少しの間だけ、ネットやニュースから離れてみてください。お友達が近くにいる方はお友達とおしゃべりしてください。仕事をしている方は、職場で話してみてください。 家族のいる人は家族と向き合って話してみてください。お子さんのいる方は、お子さんと遊んでください。
ネットやテレビで情報収集するだけじゃなく、生身の人間と交流をもつことで、気分が少し上向きになるはずです。自分の感情を誰かに話すことは、自分が本当はどう感じているのか、客観的にみる助けになります。
お友達がまだいない場合でも、とにかく外へ出てみてください。春です。生命の息吹を感じられる良い季節です。「こんな時だから」と自分を追いつめず、普通に生活を送ることは、けして悪いことではないのです。笑ったり、楽しんだりしていいのです。
もちろん、自分に何ができるだろうか、と考え、すでに行動している方も大勢いることでしょう。それはもちろん素晴らしいことだと思います。でも、がんばりすぎてはいませんか？日本のため、被災地のため、と一生懸命にがんばっている姿は、お子さんの目に誇らしくうつっているかもしれません。ですが、いつもよりもお子さんにかける時間が少なくなっていませんか？
繰り返しになりますが、自分の普段の生活を犠牲にしないでください。これくらい、被災地の方に比べたら、とがんばりすぎないでください。行動にうつしている時点で、あなたは十分がんばっています。もっともっとできるのじゃないか、と思っているかもしれません。それはその通りで、一生懸命がんばれば何だってできるでしょう。でも、私たちは短距離走の選手ではなくてマラソン選手にならないといけないのではないでしょうか。被災地への、そして日本への支援を長く続けていくために。
偉そうなことを言っているかもしれません。でもこれは、私自身への戒めのメッセージでもあります。私も、地震のことを聞いたあとは、３日程は何も手につかずただただニュースに釘付けでした（仕事中も見てました、すみません）。目が離せず、常にそのことばかり考え、夜眠れず、職場で誰かに「あなたの家族は大丈夫だった？」と聞かれるたびに涙がこぼれ落ちそうになりました。家族は無事だったのに。こんな状態はおかしいのです。ちょうど9.11の後と同じだったので、これではいけない、と気づいたのです。自分の経験についてはまたそのうち書きます。

Big Cherry Block Party ・ イベントのご報告

4月2日土曜、メリーランド州シルバースプリングで開催された Big Cherry Block Party は、まさかの嵐＆突風により午後の早い時間に打ち切りとなってしまいました。午後のボランティアの方は撤収作業を手伝うはめに。他のベンダーの方たちとしばらく呆然としてしまいました・・・。
売り上げは4７2ドルでした。また月曜までにいくつか出ましたので、現時点の合計は506ドルとなっています。原価計算をし、利益を寄付した時点でまたお知らせします。
506ドルは決して大きな額ではありませんが、降ったりやんだりの雨でまともに販売できたのは2時間弱だったこと、朝の時点でスタッフが３人いても手が回らない瞬間があり確かな手ごたえがあったこと、また国籍をとわず関心の高さを感じたことから、改善点はあるものの当面このフォーマットで行けるのではないかと思っています。
何よりも火曜日の夜にブースがもらえることが決まってからたったの３日間で各種デザイン、プロモグッズのオーダー、手作り商品の数々（折り紙作品は特に評判が高かったようです）、怒涛の打ち合わせに店出しまでこなしたわけで・・・。ボランティア全員の協力、イベント・オーガナイザーのジャネットさんのご好意なくしては実現しませんでした。ありがとうございました。そしてブースに来てくださった方、本当にありがとう。

Big Cherry Block Party へのお誘い・そしてお願い
I Support Japan 3.11 （スリーイレブンと読みます）は、東日本大震災から一週間後に立ち上げられた、震災・復興・新生支援を目的とするボランティアのプロジェクト・グループです。現在いくつかの企画を立て準備中なのですが、明日土曜日に開催される Big Cherry Block Party で急きょ販売ブースをもらえることになりましたので、取り急ぎお知らせします。

現地校や勤務先でファンドレイジングや支援を提案したいがどうアプローチしたものか・・・と思案している方が多くいらっしゃいます。また海外在住の日本人として、あるいは何らかの形で日本に関連の深い一個人として家族や友人への心配ばかりがつのり、無力感に襲われている方も少なくありません。その一方、一人で、あるいは仲間を誘ってどんどん支援活動を繰り広げられているタクマシイ方も同じぐらい多くいらっしゃるでしょう。
I Support Japan 3.11は、そんな皆さんと共に経験を分かち合い、お互いを刺激して支援活動に役立てたらと思っています。また現在は、支援のための活動プロジェクトがどんどん立ち上がっています。特に近郊のグループはお互いが何をしているか、グループごとにどんなコネクションやスキルがあるかを把握することが大事と考えます。
とにかく、私たちは、日本にいても海外にいても、被災者の方々のため、そして日本の復興・新生のためにできることは数限りなくある、と信じています！
東日本大震災で亡くなられた方々に改めてお悔やみを申し上げるとともに、被災されている皆様には心よりお見舞い申し上げます。ご提案、ご指摘等ありましたらお知らせいただければ幸いです。
